What the 1 July 2026 Changes Actually Mean for Your Organisation

Alongside the NDIS mandatory registration, new SIL-specific Practice Standards are being introduced that will redefine what quality care looks like in practice. The transition to mandatory registration for SIL providers begins on 1 July 2026. This is the confirmed commencement date, but it’s important to understand that providers do not need to be fully registered by this date — they must, however, have commenced the registration process with the NDIS Commission by this date. Preparation should begin well before then to avoid delays once requirements come into effect.

The NDIS Commission has identified Supported Independent Living as a higher-risk support due to the complexity of shared living environments and the level of care involved. Introducing NDIS mandatory registration helps strengthen oversight, improve consistency across the sector, and ensure providers are meeting the required standards for participant safety and quality outcomes.

Yes. As part of SIL provider registration, providers are required to undergo a certification audit, which is the most comprehensive audit pathway under the NDIS. This two-stage audit includes a desktop review of your documentation as well as an on-site assessment, often involving staff and participant interviews to confirm your systems are working in practice.

To meet NDIS SIL provider registration requirements, providers must comply with the Core Module along with the SIL-specific Practice Standards – which are yet to be released. These focus on areas such as participant choice and control, compatibility in shared living, incident and emergency management, and ensuring supports are delivered safely and consistently in line with NDIS SIL requirements.

Once registered, providers will be subject to ongoing regulatory oversight, including regular 18 month audits and compliance activities to ensure standards are maintained in practice.

While there’s no exact timing typically NDIS SIL provider application process can take up to six months, with the provider’s level of preparation before applying being the greatest influence on the overall timeline.

With many providers working towards the same deadline, leaving it too late can make it difficult to secure an auditor and may delay your ability to complete your SIL provider registration on time.

If you have not begun your NDIS SIL compulsory registration by the deadline, you will no longer be able to legally deliver SIL supports. For providers, this creates a real risk of service disruption, so it’s important to start preparing early and ensure your application is well underway before the transition period ends.

To meet NDIS SIL provider compliance requirements, your documentation needs to clearly reflect how your services operate in practice. This includes up-to-date policies and procedures that meet the Core Module of the NDIS Practice Standards such as incident management, complaints and feedback, workforce screening and training, and risk management tailored to shared living environments. Having the right systems and evidence in place is essential for a smooth audit and successful SIL provider registration.
