Practical Implementation Tips for SIL Providers
With the new Practice Standards now in effect, now is the time to move from planning to implementation.
We recommend providers:
- Review your policies and procedures against the new SIL Practice Standards.
- Use the Evidence Guide to identify the audit evidence you’ll need.
- Invest in workforce training to ensure staff understand the new Practice Standards and can apply them in everyday practice.
- Check participant records demonstrate supported decision-making and participant choice.
- Review service and tenancy agreements for clear separation of housing and supports.
- Use the Reflective Questions to support participant feedback and continuous improvement.
- Update your internal audit program to include the new Quality Indicators.
- Develop an implementation plan with clear actions and responsibilities.
Taking these steps now will help ensure the new Practice Standards become part of everyday practice—not simply another set of documents sitting on the shelf.
Introducing our SIL Internal Audit Checklist
One of the questions we’ve been asked most since the release of the new SIL Practice Standards is:
“Where do we start?”
To help providers prepare for the new requirements, Engels Floyd Quality Consulting has developed a comprehensive Supported Independent Living (SIL) Internal Audit Review Checklist.
Designed as a practical self-assessment tool, the checklist helps providers review their services against the revised SIL Practice Standards before an external audit. It supports organisations to identify strengths, uncover potential gaps and develop a targeted improvement plan.
