A practical handbook designed to help SIL support workers understand their responsibilities and apply the NDIS SIL Practice Standards in everyday practice.
Fully customisable, it provides organisations with a strong starting point to tailor the handbook to their own SIL services, systems and ways of working.
SIL Support Worker Handbook – Practical Guidance for the NDIS SIL Practice Standards
Having the right SIL policies and procedures is important. But your workers also need to understand what those requirements mean when they walk into a participant’s home and start their shift.
Our SIL Support Worker Handbook has been developed to help NDIS providers translate their Supported Independent Living policies and the NDIS SIL Practice Standards into clear, practical guidance for frontline workers.
Designed for providers delivering Supported Independent Living under NDIS Registration Group 0138, the handbook takes workers through the key expectations of the SIL Practice Standards and, importantly, explains what good practice looks like in everyday situations.
It covers the four key areas of the SIL Practice Standards:
Supported Decision-Making
Helping workers understand how to promote participant choice and control, support informed decision-making, respect dignity of risk and recognise the boundaries of their own role.
Safeguarding
Practical guidance on recognising and responding to abuse, neglect, violence, bullying, co-tenant conflict and other safeguarding concerns, alongside trauma-informed practice, cultural safety and positive behaviour support.
Practice Governance
Helping workers understand their role in delivering consistent, evidence-informed supports, including active support, supervision, training and competency, shift handovers, emergency planning and lone-worker safety.
Agreements about Tenancy, Housing and Support Arrangements
Guidance to help workers respect participants’ homes, privacy, visitors and tenancy rights, understand the distinction between housing and support, support positive shared living arrangements and appropriately escalate housing or tenancy concerns.
Throughout the handbook, practical examples show workers how these principles can apply during a typical SIL shift, from a participant making a decision a worker is concerned about, to co-tenant conflict, visitors, safeguarding concerns or uncertainty about a restrictive practice.
Rather than expecting frontline workers to interpret lengthy policies themselves, the handbook provides an accessible resource they can return to during induction, training, supervision and everyday practice.
Importantly, the handbook isn’t intended to replace your organisation’s SIL Policies and Procedures, participant Support Plans, risk assessments or house-specific documentation. It is designed to sit alongside them and help bridge the gap between what your policies say and what your workers actually do.

Yes. It has been developed specifically with providers delivering Supported Independent Living and the requirements associated with Registration Group 0138 in mind.
Can we customise the handbook for our organisation?
